Dr. Sian Proctor the First Black Woman to Pilot a Spacecraft

Dr. Sian Proctor, the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft.

Dr. Sian Proctor made history as the first black woman to pilot a spacecraft when the first all civilian space mission was launched by SpaceX on September 15. Dr. Proctor is also the fourth Black American woman to go into space. Although she pursued a different life path as a community college professor teaching geology for 21 years in Phoenix, Arizona, she pursued her dream to become pilot and obtained her pilot’s license at age 36. Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut, and the former First Lady Michelle Obama were among others to congratulate Dr. Proctor for her achievement. Her advice for the young girls interested in STEM to surround with friends who bring out the best in them and to dream big.
