Space Prize Challenge - NYC

The first Space Prize Challenge was designed to encourage STEM education and careers in the space industry, with a focus on high school women in New York City public schools.

The winners were promised a ZERO-G flight and mentorship from an influential woman in the space industry.
In addition, twenty-five finalists participated in a simulated mission to Mars at the Challenger Center in Manhattan.
Five additional winners were also flown to Huntsville, AL for Space Camp LIFT.

  • Cianna Berroa

    CGPS

"My expectations before camp was that it would be an incredibly intense competition. Though it was a competition It was not stress inducing, the time frame and the work periods were manageable and generous."

  • Srishte Arvind

    Hopewell Valley Central

"I came in hoping to learn more about space and satellites. I had an awesome experience and never anticipated having so much time to interact with real astronauts! I learned a lot about how satellites work and how they can help the world. Overall, I had a great time and the camp definitely furthered my interest in space."

  • Zariel Archie

    Nazareth Regional High School

"Before I came to the camp I had no idea what to expect. I just signed up because it seemed like a cool opportunity, I did not even have any interest in anything space related. After the camp I realized how vast the world is and how many options I have for my field of work. Prior to the camp I was always dead set on being a pediatric nurse but now my world view widened and I want to explore more fields."

  • Susana Carmona

    Colegio Padre Manyanet Medellín,

"Firstly, I was so happy when I got accepted because it looked like an amazing opportunity, and I was so excited, I had to work in the summer to afford the air ticket to New York, but it was worth it. I think it was one of the most wonderful experiences I could ever have. It had a significant impact on me because I got to know and learn from more people interested in STEM, especially in space, as well as we went through the engineering lectures and the CubeSat satellite building I reflected and I came to the conclusion that this is what I want to do over my life."

  • Reema Alamir

    Jeddah World Academy

"I wasn’t really expecting anything new or different but when I was there I enjoyed it so much. I met so many great people (meeting the owner of EA was honestly my favourite part of the whole camp) and had so much fun!"

  • Arden Rodriguez

    Greenwich High School

"It was a cool experience and I'm glad that I attended."

  • Anastasia

    Bayside High School

"Before the camp I was super nervous because I had limited knowledge on space exploration. However, during the experience, I got to meet a large group of girls like me interested in space exploration. I also got to receive feedback and advice from mentors who have the job I can dream of. It was a surreal experience. It made me feel more confident that being a woman in STEM was a possibility."

  • Zoe Chen

    Bayside High School

"Before the camp, I was so excited to be able to do a hands on activity to further my interest in the engineering field. When I heard that there would be astronauts giving talks I was more than ecstatic. During the event, all my expectations were met. I learned so many intricate details about satellites how they worked and more. I even got to mess with 3D modeling with tinkercad which I had never done so before. The astronaut talks were also very inspiring. Especially seeing two women there, it made me feel like I do what they did and be what they want to be. Overall, this experience pushed me further and assured me in the field that I want to continue working towards in the future."

  • Shaila Parikh

    Cathedral High School

"I was surprised about how much I learned! It was very fun and learning more about space in a STEM perspective was refreshing and eye-opening. "
