First Black Woman to Spend Months in Space

NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins waves at the audience during the astronaut graduation ceremony at Johnson Space Center in Houston Texas, on January 10, 2020.

Jessica Watkins will become the first Black women to be sent into space for a long duration mission. She attended Sally Ride elementary, and it has been her lifelong dream to study Geology on other planets. Since she has completed her doctorate in Geology, she will be sent into space to observe and photograph the geological changes of the earth from space. She will also be part of biological science and will be monitored for the effects of long-term duration in spaceflight. This is an historic step for equity because fewer than 10 of the roughly 250 people who have boarded the ISS have been Black.
