Students at the Yamaguchi Prefecture High School in Japan have designed a kimono inspired jumpsuit for the the international space station. They worked on the Kimono for about a year, and it will be sent to the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency. In 2020, third-year students at the school won “Japanese Rocket Society Sorajo (women in aerospace) award” for their outfit. And in 2021 they adjusted the design to include, “tsumugi” a Japanese silk. They used an elastic waistband rather than metal fasterners for their design as the body in space tends to swell. By addressing the necessary functions, they were able to make a better spaceship suit, which will also boost the popularity of their home city of Hagi. Having the ability to build and improve on our spacesuits and incorporating more fashion styles will hopefully also increase the interest in Space exploration in the future.
