‘STAR TREK’ ICON NICHELLE NICHOLS HONORED by nasa AT COMIC CON

In her role as Lt. Uhura on the bridge of Star Trek’s original starship Enterprise (and in her real world advocacy with NASA), Nichelle Nichols inspired a generation of young women and people of color to pursue leadership roles in the space industry. Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Comic Con hosted a special farewell dinner in Nichols’ honor that included a farewell dance and video tribute to the 88-year-old TV star. Former NASA astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, was there to speak about the impact Nichols had on her career. Astronaut Appearance Specialist Denise Young bestowed on Nichols NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal for her forty years of activism in diversifying NASA’s ranks.
